Coliforms and E. coli in water: clarity is not evidence

Microbiologically contaminated water is estimated to cause approximately 505,000 diarrhoeal deaths each year. Water being clear, odourless and tasteless does not measure that risk; measuring it is exactly what coliform and E. coli testing is for.

Why is it tested?

Because these bacteria are the only practical indicator of faecal contamination: if they are present, the water path has been breached somewhere.

Scale: what do the numbers say?

The World Health Organization estimates that some 1 million people die each year from diarrhoea as a result of unsafe drinking-water, sanitation and hand hygiene. Microbiologically contaminated water alone is estimated to cause approximately 505,000 diarrhoeal deaths each year.

Among the deaths that could be avoided if the risk factors were addressed are 395,000 children aged under 5 years.

According to WHO, contaminated water and poor sanitation are linked to the transmission of diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid and polio.

Why are these bacteria the ones measured?

Looking for every possible disease agent in water one by one is not practical: some are rare, some are hard to culture, and for some there is no routine method. An indicator approach is used instead.

Coliform bacteria, and E. coli in particular, live in the intestinal flora of humans and animals. Detecting them in water means faecal matter has entered the water somewhere — and that intestinal pathogens could have entered by the same route. Faecal enterococci are a second indicator group and, being more resistant to environmental conditions, can still show up when contamination is older.

Aerobic colony count does not look for pathogens; it gives the general bacterial load of the water. A rising count gives early warning that disinfection is weakening or that a problem has developed in a tank or a line.

What does pool regulation say about the same indicators?

The same indicator logic has a numerical counterpart in swimming pool regulation: Annex 3 of the Turkish Regulation on the Health Principles and Conditions Applicable to Swimming Pools sets the limit for total coliform bacteria and E. coli at 0/100 ml.

That shows indicator bacteria are not a parameter where “a little is acceptable”: the tolerance is zero.

Where should the sample be taken?

In water testing, what a result means depends on where the sample was taken. A compliant result at the mains inlet says nothing about the state of a storage tank or a long branch inside the facility.

A monitoring plan for a business therefore usually covers several points: the inlet, the tank outlet, the furthest point of use, and any separate systems (kitchen, ice machine, shower lines). Tracking results from the same points over time says far more than a one-off certificate of compliance.
